The jewel in Scottish Power's crown is Whitelee Wind Farm. Situated outside East Kilbride, Glasgow, this is currently Europe’s largest wind farm with 140 wind turbines producing 322 MW for the grid. The company started working with DEX Renewables, a division of DEX and Europe’s leading repair and maintenance specialist for wind turbines, in January 2009. Working beside B9 (Scottish Power Renewables Operation and Maintenance company) DEX was tasked with developing a cost-effective solution for wind turbines that were coming out of warranty. Some of the older wind turbines had experienced failures of the VRCC units. The choice for Scottish Power was either to source new parts from the OEM or have the defective units repaired. The failed VRCC units were collected from various sites around the country and sent to DEX’s European headquarters in Dublin for repair, testing and restoration to full functionality. “The cost savings from having the units repaired are significant,” said Duncan Kellet, external operations supervisor, Scottish Power Renewables. “The cost of repair is approximately one-third of buying new units. Now we have a contingency stock of repaired VRCC units at each wind farm so they can be instantly swapped out if there are any failures. This makes us less reliant on the OEM to have parts transported to site, which could cause potential disruption to our operations. A 2-3 day delay can be very costly in terms of downtime.” “Another benefit of dealing with DEX has been their warranty system. The warranty starts from the time the unit is taken out of the box not when the equipment is delivered. This means the units can have a long shelf life.” “We have found the response times from DEX to be very good. The quicker we can have the rotor control units repaired and back out in the field, the less downtime we experience. The quality of the repairs has been excellent. DEX has a long pedigree in the medical equipment and IT sectors and it applies the same rigorous quality control standards to its wind turbine repair services.” Kellet concluded, “When a wind turbine part fails it is imperative to get the wind turbine back into operation as soon as possible. Working with DEX helps us do that.” DEX is currently working on a number of additional solutions for other parts across the range of turbines in the Scottish Power fleet and expect to provide significant additional reductions in downtime and considerable component cost savings in the coming months and years ahead. DEX is also developing a web portal which will allow Scottish Power and their contractors greater visibility and control of the service parts stocks. This service, OrderVision®, is being supported by DEX's Software Solutions division, DEX Systems. About DEX Renewables The new division applies this world-leading expertise to the European and North American renewable energy sector, initially focusing on wind turbine solutions.
